On an otherwise perfect record for Adesanya (22-1), his only loss was recorded during his unsuccessful step up to become a light heavyweight fighter, losing to then-champion Jan Blacho.
On Sunday, 3rd of July 2022, the Nigerian-born New Zealand fighter successfully defended his middleweight title for the fifth times.
While Israel Mobolaji Owolabi Adesanya defeated Robert Whittaker in February for the second time to retain his middleweight strap, Cannonier knocked out Derek Brunson in the second round in February to become the weight’s No.1contender.
During the bout Israel Adesanya landed a heavy body kick and a two powerful combo punches to weaken Cannonier.
For the first time in the fight, Cannonier threw shots at Adesanya but the champion avoided it.
Cannonier aslo connected with a left and right hand as the bout was going on, before Adesanya threw a four flurry punches in return.
Adesanya landed a few hard leg kicks and then a left hand to Cannonier’s face.
Israel Adesanya finally defeated Jarred Cannonier through an unanimous decision to retain the UFC middleweight championship..
